BASIC Activities
As we in BASIC strive to serve God and live up to our name, we busy ourselves with various types of activities. These activities are designed to bring our group together for worship, service, and fun. Below you will find a list of some of the things we do on a regular basis. If you are interested in learning more about any of these activities, just let us know and we’ll be glad to share our experiences with you.
Winter Retreat
Probably the biggest event all year, the annual Winter Retreat is a great time for BASIC’s members to get recharged in the middle of a crazy school year and the beginning of a new calendar year. Typically we attend Hensel Youth Camp in Marble Falls, TX where we enjoy open country and a view that is second to none. Each year’s theme is designed to address some of the encouragements and needs of teens in this modern era. Check our our photo album to see some of the great times we’ve enjoyed through the years.
Leadership Training for Christ (LTC)
How do you train a teen to use their God-given talents for His service? Well, there are innumerable ways of accomplishing that goal, and LTC is one of them. Leadership Training for Christ is a yearly program that employs the use of public speaking, song leading, puppets, Bible Bowl/Quiz, chorus, Christian art, and many other venues to help kids make the most of their talents. Several months are spent organizing and practicing the programs which are performed at the annual convention in Houston.
Tuesday Afternoon Communion (TAC)
In the middle of a busy week, its nice to be able to get together with a group of your friends and enjoy each others’ company. That is the purpose of TAC. Each week during the school year a small group meets at a local coffee house to kick back and enjoy a snack. Although numbers are relatively small, TAC has proven to be a great opportunity for teens to build more intimate friendships that last.
Broomball
Have you ever played ice hockey in your tennis shoes? We do it at least once a year. Broomball is one of the most enjoyed activities in BASIC’s repertoire, to the point that even some of our college kids will come home just for the event. It’s a great night of slipping, falling, pointing, and laughing (in a loving Christian way of course) that brings everyone closer together. Check out some of the pictures in our photo album. You’ll really enjoy the show.
Service Projects
As our name states, we are Servants in Christ. To live up to that, BASIC works to put together various service projects throughout the year. Some of these projects include our annual Sweethearts’ Banquet, participation in the United Cerebral Palsy’s Family Day Out, and Babysitting for WOCC’s ladies’ days. The purpose of these projects is not to have special recognition for our own work, but to glorify God and remind ourselves that we are to be wholly in submission to Him.
Devotionals
While it is wonderful to worship with the entire Woodland Oaks family, sometimes its nice to engage in worship with your own age group. That’s the purpose of our devotionals. They are opportunities to get together with fellow teens and sing praises to God and hear messages that are directed specifically to your age. Typically our devo thoughts are prepared and delivered by the young men in our ministry, which adds a special meaning to this particular activity.
Mission Trips
Throughout the years, BASIC has taken many trips to many locations. Some of these campaigns have even carried us to countries like Mexico and Peru. Currently, BASIC has accepted the challenge of teaming up with the Kingsville Church of Christ in Kingsville, TX to put on a VBS for that congregation and community. It’s a great week that opens doors for the Kingsville family and encourages BASIC’s teens to get out in the field for God’s kingdom.
